After 3 months on show at the quai Branly museum in Paris, more than 160 works in the exhibition “KANAK, l’Art est une Parole” can now be seen at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Nouméa, New Caledonia, with the support of the ERAMET Groupe and SLN. The exhibition was inaugurated on March 14th and is already a great success!
“KANAK, l’Art est une Parole” is an unprecedented museum event in New Caledonia. First of all because it brings together a great many works and documents from French and European museums, the Museum of New Caledonia, ADCK (Kanak cultural development agency) and private collections over 700 m² of space. But also because most of the objects had never before been brought back to their land of origin.
So New Caledonians now have an opportunity to plunge into Kanak heritage and their country’s history. Open to the public since last Saturday and until June 15th, 2014, the exhibition was inaugurated on Friday evening with an exceptional ceremony combining a preview with traditional customs, in the presence of all the chiefs of the different Kanak customary areas who came to pay tribute to the objects on show.
“KANAK, l’Art est une Parole” was welcomed with pride and opinion. The exhibition is already a success with record visitor numbers in the first two days.
