The 2013 theme for New Caledonia’s heritage month was mining. In that spirit, the SLN’s Doniambo plant organised three open days on September 27th, 28th and 29th. They proved a great success, attracting more than 1,500 visitors.

Tours of the Doniambo site were organised around an exhibition called “A sustainable SLN for all”. Several stands and displays showed visitors the full extent of SLN’s 2,200 employees’ know-how, as well as the 6,000 indirect jobs stemming from its activity.

Personnel rallied round to welcome visitors and present SLN’s different mining and manufacturing businesses, as well as the many industrial processes used to process ore locally and export more than 55,000 tons of nickel metal per year.

The operation was a big hit with the local population, who turned out in force to discover or learn more about the activities of New Caledonia’s biggest private employer. In total almost 1,500 visitors were welcomed over the three days. September 27th was set aside for high school and university students and almost 600 took part.

Participation in this kind of event is part of SLN’s DNA. The company draws on 130 years of mining and 100 years of industrial activity at the heart of the New Caledonia’s socioeconomic landscape.
