In terms of marine environment protection, Eramet has adopted strong commitments: in 2020, it rejected the practice of marine tailings disposal, and in 2024, it formally opposed deep-sea mining. These commitments are part of the Group’s biodiversity strategy, which has been recognized and validated by the act4nature and Business for Nature initiatives. They are fully aligned with the goals of the United Nations Ocean Conference.

A Collective Mobilization to Protect Marine Ecosystems

As part of this effort, Eramet has signed the Business Statement for Ocean Protection, an initiative endorsed by more than 80 companies and organizations from 25 countries. Supported by leading economic networks such as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Economic Forum (WEF), and Business for Nature, this statement aims to accelerate private sector engagement in protecting marine ecosystems. It also calls on policymakers to adopt ambitious, science-based policies grounded in sustainability at the land-sea interface.

A Long-Term Environmental Commitment

With this endorsement, Eramet reaffirms its intent to take concrete action to protect marine ecosystems, in line with its biodiversity strategy.

In 2023, the Group conducted a biodiversity footprint assessment covering its operations and upstream value chain. The biodiversity commitments were renewed in 2024, based on the results of this assessment. Recognized by act4nature international and Business for Nature, they notably include:

  • Applying the most demanding international standards (IRMA, IFC PS6),
  • Systematic involvement of local stakeholders,
  • Mapping of ecosystem services and identification of critical areas,
  • Quantifying biodiversity losses and gains, with the goal of achieving a net gain,
  • Transparent communication of results.

Through this mobilization, Eramet confirms its role as a responsible actor in the transition toward a more sustainable economy, mindful of natural and marine balances.

As an industrial player committed to the responsible transformation of mineral resources, Eramet views the preservation of marine ecosystems as a non-negotiable imperative. By signing the Business Statement for Ocean Protection, we reaffirm our stance on this issue and our desire to contribute to a sustainable economy based on rigorous scientific practices and stakeholder dialogue. This initiative embodies a momentum we actively support: a development model in which industrial performance goes hand in hand with the preservation of natural environments. It is fully aligned with Eramet’s purpose – to become a benchmark for the responsible transformation of Earth’s mineral resources for a better shared future – as well as with our Act for Positive Mining roadmap, which guides all our actions in terms of environmental and social responsibility.
