On June 5, in Moanda, Gabon, the Lékédi Biodiversity Foundation celebrated the conclusion of “Gabon Green Generation by Lékédi”, an ambitious educational initiative that marked the 2024–2025 school year with its dedication to youth and the environment.
A Strongly Impactful First Edition
Launched in November 2024, the program was rolled out in four high schools in Moanda and Bakoumba, reaching 1,200 students in ninth and tenth grade. Over several months, the students completed more than 730 hours of coursework covering topics such as:
- Gabonese biodiversity and its threats
- Climate change
- Eco-friendly practices
- Waste management
- Careers in sustainable development
These educational materials were developed in partnership with the National Pedagogical Institute and approved by the Ministry of National Education.
Green Clubs to Deepen Engagement
The program was not limited to theory. It also saw the creation of four green clubs in the participating schools, which carried out tangible actions: tree planting, awareness campaigns, recycling and waste collection initiatives, and participation in the Earth Hour movement.
A Creative and Committed Finale
The program’s highlight was the final of the inter-school competition “Nature’s Defenders”. Through five creative and educational challenges, students showcased their knowledge and environmental commitment.
During the closing ceremony, students presented what they had learned through exhibitions, slam poetry, and videos. The Green Club of Zacharie Maïka High School in Bakoumba won first prize in the inter-club competition for their awareness video. All clubs were rewarded (books, gift vouchers), and school leaders were honored for their involvement.
Another key moment was the announcement that 16 students from the program were selected to participate in the LCOY Gabon (Local Conference of Youth) to be held in July in Libreville, as a lead-up to the COP.
This first phase of the Gabon Green Generation by Lékédi program ends on an inspiring note. It fully embodies the vision of the Lékédi Biodiversity Foundation: to foster a Gabonese youth that is aware of and actively contributing to ecological transition.
