Manganese: an essential metal
Known since ancient times as a coloring agent for glass and ceramics, manganese is the fourth most widely used metal in the world, after iron, aluminum and copper. Steel is the main market for its use, accounting for 90% of manganese consumption.
Comprehensive command of the value chain: extraction, processing, transportation
Through our subsidiary Eramet Comilog in Gabon, our manganese ore is extracted from the Moanda mines, the world’s largest manganese mines.
Setrag, a Eramet Comilog subsidiary, operates a rail network linking eastern and western Gabon. This rail network carries passengers, goods, and forestry products, as well as Eramet Comilog’s ore and metallurgical products.
These are then transported to the Group’s processing plants. Eramet’s manganese alloy production facilities are located on three continents:
- Eramet Marietta (United States)
- Eramet Norway (Norway)
- Comilog Dunkerque (France)
- Eramet Comilog (Gabon) with its Moanda Metallurgical Complex (CMM) and Moanda Industrial Complex (CIM).
Our products: a CO2 footprint lower than the industry average
Eramet’s manganese processing activity has one of the lowest emission rates in the industry (57% lower than the industry average, according to a study by CRU consulting), thanks to the use of hydroelectric power at its industrial sites in Norway and Gabon, and decarbonized energy in France.
Industrial tests using bioreducers are under way at our Norwegian facilities, offering new prospects for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These bioreducers are produced using biomass, such as wood waste.

The Comilog Dunkerque plant produces silicomanganese, an alloy of manganese and silicon, used to enhance steel and improve its strength and durability.

Eramet Marietta is the largest producer of manganese alloys in North America and the only producer of ferromanganese in the United States. The plant is strategically located along the Ohio River, conveniently positioned to receive raw materials from Gabon, and to supply its steelmaking customers located nearby.

A world leader in refined manganese alloys, Eramet Norway manufactures products for use in the production of steel. Located in the fjords of southern Norway, Eramet Norway’s three plants run exclusively on renewable energy and are mainly supplied with manganese ore from Eramet Comilog’s mines.
