From September 4 to 6, Eramet took part in the Water Congress, the international congress on water management in mining and industrial processes. Ingrid Oyarz\u00fan, President of Eramet Ideas,<\/a> chaired this 12th<\/sup> edition over 3 days in Santiago, Chile, accompanied by her team. Representatives of Eramine, Eramet’s subsidiary in Argentina, and Christine D\u00e9n\u00e9riaz, Group Environment Director, were also present.<\/p>\n

This event brings together experts, industrialists, governmental and regulatory authorities from all over the world to discuss issues related to water resources, such as supply, inventory and characterization of sources, security of supply, climate change and desalination.<\/p>\n

It is organized by the Faculty of Mining Engineering of the University of Chile, the Center of Water Resources for Agriculture and Mining of the University of Concepci\u00f3n, SMI-ICE-Chile, the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (Senegal) and Gecamin.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

This congress offers us an excellent opportunity to innovate and collaborate in the field of water management, and gives us visibility on best practices. It’s a great platform for sharing experience on this critical subject.<\/p>\n

We need to be prepared to support opportunities that arise in the area of water management and quality. In this way, we ensure that mining activity coexists harmoniously with other sectors and provides safe sanitation facilities for local communities.<\/p>\n

Rigorous water management throughout the Group<\/h2>\n

Because water is essential to the mining industry, it is crucial to manage it sustainably.<\/p>\n

At Eramet, it is used to cool pyrometallurgical furnaces and to transport, process and wash ores. That’s why the Group does its utmost to reduce consumption, through recycling for example; and to preserve the resource, sometimes shared with local populations, particularly in water-stressed areas.<\/p>\n

This is the case in Senegal, in the desert area of Diogo, where Eramet Grande C\u00f4te operates a mineral sands mine<\/a>. In addition to withdrawing only the quantity of water strictly necessary for its activities, Grande C\u00f4te has set up a deep groundwater pumping system to avoid using water from the surface water table \u2013 all under the regular supervision of the Senegalese government. In addition, this process recycles around 50% of the water consumed and replenishes the surface water table.<\/p>\n

Several thousand kilometers away, in Argentina, Eramet also operates a lithium production plant<\/a>. Thanks to its research and innovation center, the Group has developed a unique and innovative direct lithium extraction (DLE) process, the most water-efficient on the market, and while the process does require fresh water, 60% of the water consumed is recycled.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Innovating for better preservation<\/h2>\n

To find ever more efficient solutions, Eramet relies on open innovation: in 2023, the Group has launched the Water Resource Innovation Challenge, in partnership with EITRawMaterials.<\/p>\n

The challenge called on start-ups to propose their innovative solutions, based on cutting-edge technologies, to help Eramet better manage the water used in its industrial processes. The three main issues were monitoring water quality on mining sites; controlling and managing our water consumption; and recovering and recycling water.<\/p>\n

Finnish company Weeefiner won the award for its \u201c4D Scavanger\u201d product<\/a>, designed to recover metals from industrial process wastewater.<\/p>\n<\/div>
