Our objectives

  • Create a project that is socially and environmentally compliant with the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards.
  • Incorporating respectful technological choices (no solid discharge into the sea, limited use of water, rehabilitation, etc.)
  • Contribute to electromobility by supplying nickel and cobalt for 1.5 million electric batteries

Becoming a leader in the electric battery industry

To meet the challenges of the energy transition, Eramet and BASF are developing a hydrometallurgical plant project in Halmahera, Indonesia. It will produce a nickel and cobalt intermediate that will be used to produce nickel and cobalt salts, two essential components in the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries.

The project

A strategic partnership

Our nickel expertise

Eramet has exceptional nickel deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia, enabling it to meet the world’s current and future needs. These deposits are being developed in line with the Group’s social and environmental commitments.

With high-potential mining deposits and unique metallurgical know-how, Eramet is well positioned to supply the critical metals needed for the energy transition. This partnership with BASF for the production of a nickel and cobalt-based intermediate product in Indonesia is an excellent opportunity, in line with our ambition to supply the electric vehicle battery industry reliably and responsibly.

A project integrated into its social environment

The Sonic Bay project site is located in Halmahera, Indonesia, in the Indonesian Weda Bay Industrial Park. This industrial complex is part of Indonesia’s national strategic plan to develop the downstream industry of the electric vehicle battery value chain.
